6 Small Ways You Can Improve Your Mood and Confidence

By Empowered & Poised

Do you ever have those days where every little thing seems to bring you down? Imagine you wake up, make your bed and are excited and ready to head off to school. You get a test back in your first period class, but you did not do as well as you thought. Throughout the day, your friends are not being as kind as they usually are, which brings your mood down even more. You also feel behind in some of your classes, which stresses you out to the max. You try not to let these things bother you, but you cannot seem to shake the horrible thoughts racing through your head. Then, as you are walking home from school, the strap on your favorite pair of sandals breaks. Finally, when you get home, everyone seems too busy to notice how upset you are, which causes you to feel alone and makes it more challenging to calm down.

Days like this tend to bring most people down. But, there’s good news! There are a few simple ways you can improve your mood and confidence, even when you are having a tough day. Check out the six tips below and consider what you might be able to try when you’re having a bad day.

1. PRACTICE POSITIVE SELF-TALK

If you constantly tell yourself you are no good or not worth it, then you will eventually start believing it, even if it isn't true. Instead, you can work toward more positive self-talk. At Empowered & Poised, we like to remind ourselves that we are strong, brave, and loved, especially when we’re feeling unworthy.

2. DON’T BEAT YOURSELF UP IF YOU MAKE A MISTAKE

Everyone makes mistakes, and everyone has tough days! Learn from your mistakes, and remember that it is okay to have a bad day. For example, when you do not succeed at first, remind yourself that you did not fail. You just achieve your goal YET. Try writing a list of things you can tell yourself when you feel down or hopeless.

3. GET MOVING

Exercising can help you to reduce stress and clear your mind. Our body releases hormones when we are active called endorphins, which help us to feel better.

What’s your favorite way to get up and moving?

4. CELEBRATE THE SMALL STUFF

You woke up and made your bed. Check! You made it to school or work on time. Check again! Even small accomplishments are worth celebrating.

What accomplishments can you celebrate from today, this week, or this month?

5. FOCUS ON THINGS YOU CAN CHANGE

Stressing over what happened in the past and letting it ruin your confidence only sets you back. So, if you didn’t do so well on an assignment, figure out what ways you CAN improve on your next assignment.

Sometimes we get upset because of how other people treat us, but we cannot change how they act. We CAN change how we respond.

If someone is being unkind, what are ways you CAN take control of the situation to help protect your feelings?

6. SURROUND YOURSELF WITH SUPPORTIVE PEOPLE

You have the ability to choose who you spend time with. Try your best to surround yourself with people who make you feel good and motivate you to be the best person you can be.

What are your favorite qualities about your best friend?
