Finding Balance By Putting Yourself First
By Empowered & Poised
Balance. It’s something everyone wants to have in their work and personal lives. As hard as we try to keep these worlds separate, they’re bound to overlap at some point - work will somehow interfere with your personal life, and vice versa. It’s unavoidable! However, there are many ways to keep a healthy balance in your home and in the workplace.
Here at Empowered & Poised, balance is one of our top priorities… just check out our wellness triangle! We believe that, to reach a state of wellness, one must be socially, mentally and physically healthy. This applies to all women and girls - making yourself a priority and nourishing all aspects of your life will help you reach a happy, balanced state of mind.
Listed below are five simple and easy ways to find a good personal balance.
1. Stay away from your email on weekends. While it can be hard to push ongoing projects and assignments from your mind, try to keep your weekends free so you can relax, decompress and disconnect. As crazy as it may sound, your work can wait until Monday.
2. Don’t check your phone 24/7. Social media is addicting, and once you open an app, it’s easy to scroll through it for hours on end. Try checking your phone every two hours or so, to avoid looking at notifications constantly. Trust me, social media affects your personal life way more than you think. When’s the last time you had a conversation without your phone in reach?
3. Find time for physical fitness. Not everyone is a professional athlete, and there’s nothing wrong with that. However, making time for exercise is very important, as it’s linked to both mental and physical fitness. Try taking a walk, a leisurely bike ride or simply stretching your limbs. Anything is better than nothing!
4. Check up on your friends. When work gets hectic, sometimes your social life will suffer as a result. Be proactive! Shoot your friend a text once a week, make a coffee date with her, or make plans to see her in advance. As my aunt likes to say: “Friendships are like gardens. You must tend to them!”
5. Check up on YOU. Amidst the chaos, make sure you’re doing well in a mental sense. Journaling is a simple and easy way to become more aware of yourself and how you’re feeling. While it’s important to tend to your friendships, it’s just as important to tend to yourself, your feelings and your emotional well-being.
Finding a perfect life balance may seem impossible, and it very well may be. However, there are countless ways to ensure you’re content with all aspects of your life… you just have to put yourself first!
