My Life as a Skater

By Emerson Keller

Who is your role model? Why?

My role model is my very first synchronized ice skating coach. She began skating at a very young age like I did. (I started ice skating at age 4.) She continued skating throughout her high school years, then went on to skate in college for the Haydenettes, an elite team that has earned the Team USA designation many times.

I wanted to be just like her from the first time she coached me! I always try to have the same passion and enthusiasm on the ice that she does. She inspired me to keep skating during high school and to pursue a skating career in college. Now that I’m an ice skating coach for kids ages 2 to 16, I use the things that she taught me to inspire my students too.

What are you most proud of in your life?

I’m most proud of the fact that I have been able to maintain my grades while competing in figure skating, a highly competitive sport that requires very early and very late practices, travel around the US, and completion of a series of challenging individual skating tests. Balancing everything is hard, but it is worth it. I know the lessons I have learned from competing, and the friends I have made along the way, will stay with me forever.

What are you passionate about?

Obviously, the thing I’m most passionate about is ice skating! I also enjoy staying healthy and active. I train and work out on my own and at the ice rink by stretching, jumping, lifting weights, and running, as well as doing core strength training and ab workouts. I also do my best to eat healthily. I’ve been a vegetarian for 2 1/2 years, and I like finding and trying new recipes.

I haven’t completely decided on a college major, but I am interested in science, especially chemistry. I enjoy spending time with my friends, going shopping, and driving around listening to music. I also love to travel - my favorite place to visit is New York City!

What is your favorite inspirational quote?

I attribute my success to this: I never gave or took an excuse.
