5 Ways To Show Gratitude Now and Always

By Empowered & Poised

1. Say Thank You And Mean It

Oftentimes, saying “thank you” can feel like a habit. We probably say thank you over 10 times a day (e.g.when someone holds the door for you, after you check out at the grocery store, when you pick up your coffee).  Expressing gratitude should come from a place of authenticity . Helping those around you feel seen, heard, and appreciated is so important. It only takes a few seconds to make eye contact and smile when you thank someoneThis small effort can go a long way for those on the receiving end.  It can make someone’s day or even week to simply feel appreciated!

2. Look At Life With Love

It is so important to appreciate the small things in life!  A morning commute, view from your school desk, or your neighborhood can start to seem mundane, but if you look closely there is always something beautiful and new to be seen. For example, take a moment to pause and appreciate the beautiful tree covered in sparkling snow or the beautiful snow man your neighbors built. It may take some to learn to look at the world with a new perspective, but this small shift in perspective can spark inspiration and gratitude by making you feel more connected to the things around you.

3. Keep A Gratitude Journal

Another amazing way to express gratitude is to keep a gratitude journal.  Keeping a journal on hand allows you to write down anything that you are grateful for or happy to have in your life.  You can write about a good friend, your loving family, a cuddly pet, or a growing plant you own. Maybe you even want to share about a latte that tasted extra great this morning! Whatever it is that you are thankful for, a gratitude journal is a great way to capture the little or big things that make you feel good.  You can carry an old notebook in your bag or keep one by your nightstand to write down a couple of things you are thankful for throughout the course of the day. This simply practice makes even the most stressful day feel like a win!

4. Turn Your Negative Thoughts Into Positive Actions

Having a bad day is crummy for everyone, and complaining about your day can exacerbate the issue and make you feel worse .   Complaining can also impact those around you. Try not to be that friend who is always negative and ungrateful . Instead, take those negative thoughts and turn them into positive action: meditate, take deep breaths, journal or workout.  You’ll be surprised how big of a weight is lifted off your chest when you turn your negative thoughts into positive actions.

5. Practice Self-Love And Self-Care

Keeping your mind and body healthy will help you to think positive and show gratitude in a genuine way.  Working on yourself will help you feel your best and you’ll better be able to help others feel their best as well.  Practicing self-love and self-care can include practicing mindfulness, being kind to yourself taking a break when you need one, loving your body, and filling your life with positive people and healthful foods.  Making sure you are taking care of yourself can help you to feel more grateful for everything around you.
