Loving the Skin You’re In

By Empowered & Poised

Demonstrating body positivity can be challenging when your size isn’t offered at a store, when the clothes look different for different sizes, when the models don’t represent different body types or when photos are photoshopped to show unrealistic and unhealthy bodies.  Whether you are struggling to find clothing that makes you feel like you or are having a hard time accepting where you are now, you’re not alone. For both women and men, demonstrating body positivity can be hard and can really hurt you when you are bombarded with images that don’t represent you.  Take some tips below to stay positive and realize that your unique traits make you YOU!

  1. Surround yourself with a great support system.  Whether you are comfortable with expressing your insecurity or you are surrounding yourself with positive and accepting friends, you will feel more at ease.  Being around people who are self-critical can make you feel miserable. Having family and friends you know what you are going through can make sure you are supported in times of need.

  2. Work toward accepting the now, not stressing about the future or regretting the past.  Stressing about working to look a certain way or dwelling on how you looked in the past can really create a lot of internal stress.  While accepting the present can be hard, it will help you grow stronger every day.

  3. Know that you are more.  You are more than your appearance.  You are more than the outside. Reminding yourself of that can help you think and appreciate your other AMAZING qualities.

Finding peace with yourself is a journey, and it can be a very hard journey for some.  Remembering who you are and following the tips above are a great start to staying true to yourself and loving every part of yourself.
